Autumn begins on 1 March across Australia. March 2027 brings shorter days and cooler mornings to the southern states, while the tropical north's wet season continues through the month, with cyclone activity still active ahead of its end in April. The south moves out of its summer bushfire peak as the season turns over into the cooler months. Labour Day applies only in Western Australia, Victoria and Tasmania during March, on different Mondays in each.
Labour Day gives Western Australia, Victoria and Tasmania a long weekend in March 2027, while every other state and territory works through an equivalent week without one. Leave planned around March in states without a Labour Day holiday falls on an ordinary working week rather than one extended by a public holiday. Daylight saving continues through the whole of March in the five states that observe it.
March 2027 closes with autumn established across the southern states and the football codes both under way. April follows with Easter and ANZAC Day, the two national observances that give autumn its busiest run of public holidays anywhere on the calendar, alongside the end of daylight saving in the south-eastern states. The NRL and AFL seasons both open during March, restarting the national winter sporting calendar.
