Adelaide Cup Day, observed on the second Monday in March, takes its name from the Adelaide Cup horse race, first run in 1864 and one of South Australia's oldest sporting institutions. For well over a century the public holiday and the running of the race fell on the same day, giving Adelaide a genuine race-day holiday in the mould of Melbourne Cup Day in Victoria. That direct link has since loosened: the Adelaide Cup race itself moved to a date in May, run as part of South Australia's autumn racing carnival, while the public holiday stayed put on its March date, named after a race that, on the day itself, is no longer run.

That split is one of the more curious quirks in the Australian public holiday calendar — a holiday that still carries the name and civic memory of a race meeting it no longer coincides with.

Despite the race having moved, the March long weekend is still treated in Adelaide as a low-key community holiday: a chance for outdoor events, market days and family activities during one of the more pleasant stretches of South Australian autumn weather.
