The second Monday in March carries two related but separately named public holidays: Labour Day in Victoria and Eight Hours Day in Tasmania. Both trace back to the same event — the campaign by Melbourne stonemasons and building workers who, in 1856, won the right to an eight-hour working day, one of the earliest such victories by organised labour anywhere in the world. Their slogan, "eight hours labour, eight hours recreation, eight hours rest," became the rallying cry for the broader movement that spread the principle across the Australian colonies over the following decades.

Victoria named its holiday simply Labour Day, in line with several other states, while Tasmania kept the more literal Eight Hours Day, a naming choice that points directly back to the original demand rather than to the labour movement in general. Both holidays land on the same date, a rare case of two states sharing a public holiday under different names for the same historical reason.

How it's marked

In Melbourne, the long weekend coincides with Moomba, the city's long-running community festival featuring a parade along the Yarra, fireworks, water-ski displays and family entertainment in the city centre — one of the largest free community festivals in the country. In Tasmania, Eight Hours Day tends to be marked more quietly, as a long weekend rather than a festival occasion, though union and community groups sometimes hold events recalling the stonemasons' campaign.

In Tasmania, trading is quieter and more typical of a standard long weekend, with tourist regions such as the east coast and Hobart's waterfront seeing a lift in visitor numbers. Anyone travelling to Melbourne for the long weekend should factor in the Moomba crowds and road closures well ahead of the Monday itself, since the festival programming typically runs across the full three days.
